Inocarpus fagifer, also known as the Tahitian chestnut or Polynesian chestnut, is a flowering plant in the legume family found in the tropics of the south-west Pacific and south-east Asian regions. It has a long history of traditional use by the peoples of Polynesia and Melanesia and is the only edible and culturally significant member of its genus. The tree has a medium size and can reach up to 30 meters in height with a lifespan of 80-90 years. Its leaves are dark green and leathery, while its fragrant flowers have five white to cream petals. The tree produces fruit that is slightly flattened and changes color from green to yellow or orange brown as it ripens. The seeds, which are toxic when raw but edible when cooked, are contained within a thin, fibrous shell. The tree is found in a wide range of soils and has various traditional uses, such as in herbal medicine, as firewood, and for building and crafting. Its kernels are an important food source in many Pacific island countries and the tree also has uses in agroforestry. There are also various myths and folklore surrounding the tree in different cultures.
