In summary, Inga edulis, also known as ice-cream bean, is a fruit native to South America that is widely grown for its shade, food, timber, and medicinal properties. Its taxonomic name is derived from its Tupí name and its species name means "edible" in Latin. The fruit is popular in Peru, Ecuador, Brazil, Venezuela, and Colombia. The tree can reach up to 30 meters in height and has a pale grey trunk with alternate, pinnate leaves. It forms symbiotic relationships with ants and other insects, and its flowers are fragrant and arranged in dense spikes. The fruit is a cylindrical pod with a sweet, cottony pulp surrounding the seeds. Inga edulis is widely cultivated in agroforestry systems and is used as a food crop, particularly for its sweet pulp. It is also used in traditional medicine for various ailments. Further research is needed to explore its potential as a source of antioxidants.
