Gleditsia aquatica, also known as water locust or swamp locust, is a tree native to the Southeastern United States and nearby areas. It can grow up to 50-60 feet and is commonly found in swamps, preferring partial sunlight. Similar to other plants in its family, it produces flat legumes, but typically only containing one seed. Its leaves are usually simple-compounded, but can sometimes resemble those of the Acacia plant. This tree is mainly found in the southern regions of the US, from Florida to eastern Texas and as far north as Ohio and New York. It is hardy in zones 6-9 and has been known to hybridize with Gleditsia triacanthos in areas where their ranges overlap.
