Gastrolobium bilobum, also known as heart-leaved poison, is a shrub found only in the south west region of Western Australia. It belongs to the Fabaceae family and is known for its high levels of monofluoroacetic acid, making it one of the most toxic species in the Gastrolobium genus. The plant can grow up to 4 meters tall and produces yellow-orange flowers with a red and maroon coloration. It was first described by botanist Robert Brown in 1811 and has been studied extensively, including through nucleotide and protein sequencing. Despite its misleading common name, the leaves of this plant are actually wedge-shaped. It is typically found in granite-based soils in areas such as peaks, outcrops, and along rivers, and is often associated with karri and marri forests, as well as mallee and heathland. The plant has been written about in local press since the 19th century, with a focus on its impact on agriculture.
