Dipogon lignosus, also known as the okie bean, Cape sweet-pea, dolichos pea, or mile-a-minute vine, is a unique flowering plant in the legume family, Fabaceae. It is the only species in its genus, Dipogon, and belongs to the subfamily Faboideae. This climbing plant has woody stems and can reach up to 2m in height. Its leaves are composed of three diamond-shaped leaflets and its flowers are pink, mauve, magenta, or purple in color. Dipogon lignosus is native to South Africa and can be found in forest margins and stream banks. However, it has become an invasive weed in Australia and New Zealand. This plant has a symbiotic relationship with nitrogen-fixing bacteria, which enhances soil fertility. It has been widely cultivated in various regions, including Europe, Australia, and South America. Dipogon lignosus is a highly effective invader, with its seeds being explosively ejected from pods and dispersed by birds or water. Control of this plant can be labor-intensive, and the best strategy is to minimize disturbance and target larger infestations. Its scientific name, lignosus, means woody in Latin
