Dalbergia latifolia, also known as Indian rosewood, is a highly valued timber species native to the tropical monsoon forests of southeast India. It can grow up to 40 meters tall and has grey bark, pinnately compound leaves, and small white flowers. The tree is both evergreen and deciduous, making it resilient to drought. However, it can be susceptible to pests such as the fungal Haematonectria haematococca and a species of Phytophthora. The wood from this tree is prized for its durability and resistance to rot and insects, making it popular for furniture, musical instruments, and other products. Due to its slow growth, there are efforts to maintain germplasm resources and establish plantations in India and Java. The exportation of wild harvested D. latifolia is illegal under the Indian Forest Act, but there is still a high demand and price for its wood. However, other species such as Dalbergia sissoo and engineered rosewoods have become more popular for economic purposes.
