Crotalaria juncea, also known as brown hemp, Indian hemp, Madras hemp, or sunn hemp, is a tropical Asian plant of the legume family. It is believed to have originated in India and is now widely grown throughout the tropics and subtropics for its use as green manure, fodder, and lignified fiber. It is also being studied as a potential bio-fuel. However, it can also be an invasive weed and has been listed as a noxious weed in some areas. The plant has yellow flowers and elongated leaves and can grow up to 100-1000 cm tall.
In modern applications, Crotalaria juncea has been found to have many practical uses. It is a source of natural fiber, used for cordage, fishing nets, and ropes, and is resistant to root-knot nematodes, making it a beneficial crop for improving soil quality through nitrogen fixation. It has also been studied for its potential as a bio-fuel, with a novel extraction method showing promising results. Additionally, Crotalaria juncea has been found to have allelopathic effects on weeds and other crops, making it useful for weed management and improving nutrient patterns in agricultural plants.
