Calicotome spinosa, also known as the thorny broom or spiny broom, is a shrub that belongs to the Fabaceae family. It can grow up to three meters tall and is covered in sharp spines. This plant is native to the Western Mediterranean region and is commonly found on sunny slopes and dry, rocky ground. It can be found in countries such as Spain, France, Italy, Croatia, Morocco, Tunisia, Libya, Algeria, and Turkey, and has also been introduced to New Zealand. From March to June, it produces bright yellow flowers either singly or in small clusters. The seed-pods of this plant are almost hairless and can reach up to 30mm in length. This species is often confused with Calicotome villosa, but can be distinguished by its hairless seed-pods. In ancient times, the florets of this plant were used to flavor sesame oil. This process involved drying the florets in the sun and then mixing them with sesame seeds multiple times until the desired fragrance was achieved. Today, Bedouins still use the florets to flavor butter.
