It is an evergreen shrub or small tree that grows up to 10 meters in height. The leaves are opposite, lanceolate, and leathery, with a glossy green upper surface and a paler underside. The flowers are white or pink, and appear in dense panicles in the spring and summer. The fruit is a small capsule containing several small seeds. Escallonia paniculata is an attractive ornamental plant, and is widely cultivated in gardens and parks. It is also used as a hedge or screen plant, and is tolerant of pruning. It is drought tolerant and prefers full sun, but will tolerate partial shade. It is also frost tolerant, but may suffer damage in severe cold.
