Franklinia is a unique flowering tree that belongs to the monotypic genus in the tea family, Theaceae. Its sole species, Franklinia alatamaha, is commonly known as the Franklin tree and is native to the Altamaha River valley in Georgia, USA. Despite being extinct in the wild since the early 19th century, it continues to survive as a cultivated ornamental tree. In the past, it was often classified under the genus Gordonia, but recent studies have placed it closer to the Asian genus Schima. The tree is prized for its fragrant white flowers and can live for over a century once established. Its seeds require a long time to mature and it exhibits a rare zygotic dormancy. The history of Franklinia's discovery and subsequent disappearance in the wild is a fascinating one, and all the trees in existence today are descendants of seeds collected by the Bartram family and propagated in Philadelphia. Despite efforts to reintroduce it to its native habitat, the tree has not been successful due to its status as a glacial relict. Cultivating the Franklin tree can be challenging, as it requires specific soil conditions and is susceptible to root and crown rot. It is a popular choice for garden cultivation and is one of only two species

Germination/Propagation Top

Sow at 4°C for 3 weeks, then increase to 20°C.
Sow seeds immediately as their viability decreases rapidly, or they best germinate when fresh. If stored, seeds might need temperature cycling and patience to germinate.
