Pouteria lucuma is a tree species that is native to the Andean valleys of Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador, and Peru. It is cultivated for its fruit, the lúcuma, which has a sweet and unique flavor. The tree can grow up to 20 meters tall and has greyish-brown bark. The fruit is globose, 6-12 cm long, and has a bright yellow pulp. It is believed to have been first seen by Europeans in Ecuador in 1531 and has been represented in the art of the Moche people. Lúcuma is mainly grown in Peru, but also in limited amounts in Bolivia, Chile, and Costa Rica. It is not typically successful in other climates, but has been successfully grown in Vietnam. The fruit is harvested from October to March in Peru and from June to November in Chile. Lúcuma is commonly used in juice, milkshakes, and ice cream in Peru and is described as having a flavor similar to sweet potato, maple syrup, or butterscotch. It is also used in desserts, such as manjar de lúcuma. The fruit is high in moisture and also contains glucose, fructose, sucrose, and various acids. Limited nutritional information
