Pouteria costata, also known as tawapou or bastard ironwood, is a small coastal tree native to the northern North Island of New Zealand and Norfolk Island in Australia. Its name comes from the Latin word for ribbed, referring to the prominent raised nerves on its leaves. It belongs to the Pouteria genus, which has around 300 species found in tropical regions around the world. Tawapou has undergone several scientific name changes and is sometimes mistakenly grouped with other Pouteria species found in the Pacific Islands. It is an endangered species on Norfolk Island and grows in association with other trees like pohutukawa and karaka. Tawapou is a slow-growing tree that produces glossy leaves and colorful fruit, which are consumed by birds like the kererū and kākā parrot. However, its population has been significantly reduced by the introduction of rats, which eat the fruit and destroy the seeds. In Māori culture, tawapou is significant as it was used as rollers for canoes and has legends surrounding its arrival in New Zealand.
