Manilkara obovata is a species of evergreen tree in the Sapotaceae family that is found in West and Central Africa. It has a scaly brown bark and can grow up to 40 meters tall. Its leaves are simple, alternate arrangement and tufted at the ends of branches, and the stipules are small. Its flowers are pale yellow to white, clusters of 3-4 on leaf axils, and its fruit is an orange colored berry when ripe. Test on stem bark, root and leaf extracts of the species identified phenyl-coumarin derivatives, xanthones, saponins, triterpenes and flavonoids. The root is used as a laxative, while stem bark is used as part of a regimen to treat stomach ailment. The wood is used for construction, furniture and for making canoes.
