Genus Description
Suggest a correction!Parathesis (Hook.f.) is placed in Primulaceae, subfamily Myrsinoideae, as circumscribed in the APG IV system (APG, 2016; Ståhl, 1996). The genus comprises evergreen shrubs and trees, with approximately 80–90 accepted species depending on treatment. Its center of diversity lies in Mesoamerica, especially southern Mexico and Central America, with extensions into the northern Andes and northern South America, where it occurs in montane and cloud forests, and occasionally in drier or lower-elevation woodlands and thickets. It generally occupies moist, shaded sites from lowlands to mid-elevations. The generic type is Parathesis glutinosa (Klotzsch) Mez, although this has been treated as Stylogyne glutinosa by some authors (Ståhl, 1996; WFO, 2024; POWO, 2024).
Diagnostic characters include leathery, entire to crenate leaves that are spirally arranged and often estipulate, sometimes with a pellucid punctate-dotted blade; compact, usually terminal thyrsoid inflorescences bearing numerous small, pentamerous flowers; stamens attached at the corolla tube base; a superior, unilocular ovary with free-central placentation bearing two to several ovules; and fruits that are red to black drupes with one to several seeds (Ståhl, 1996). Its flowers are small and lack a conspicuous tube–throat constriction characteristic of some related genera.
The range follows the Mesoamerican cordillera and northern Andes, with marked regional endemism where montane refugia and complex topography have driven diversification (Myers et al., 2000). Habitats include cloud, montane, and sometimes lower montane dry forests; in the Andes, species often occur above 1000 m, in Mexico and Central America from near sea level to about 2000 m, with some assemblages in more mesic slopes and ravines.
Intrinsic biology is imperfectly known. Pollination appears to involve small insects, and fruits are dispersed by birds that consume drupes; seedling dynamics in cloud-forest sites suggest shade tolerance and persistence in fragmented landscapes, but detailed phenology and chromosome counts remain poorly documented (Ståhl, 1996).
Taxonomically, Parathesis is part of the Myrsinoideae clade alongside neotropical genera such as Myrsine and Stylogyne. Delimitation has been labile: some treatments treat Parathesis and Stylogyne separately, while others segregate Parathesis species into Stylogyne, reflecting ongoing debate over the breadth of these genera (Ricketson & Pipoly, 1997; Ståhl, 1996). Standard databases list accepted names under Parathesis (WFO, 2024; POWO, 2024), but different authors continue to apply alternative circumscriptions (Ricketson & Pipoly, 1997), underscoring the need for a modern, phylogeny-based synthesis.
Human relevance is modest: some species are used locally as ornamental shrubs and in landscape plantings in humid, high-elevation sites; no major timbers or crops are associated with the genus, and invasiveness has not been reported (Ståhl, 1996).
Conservation and outlook remain data-poor. Habitat loss, especially deforestation in cloud and montane forests, is a primary threat, and resolving the generic boundary with Stylogyne is essential to assess species limits, biogeography, and conservation priorities.
