, the muttonwood is a popular ornamental tree
Myrsine variabilis, also known as the muttonwood or variable muttonwood, is a tree native to eastern Australia. It can be found from southern New South Wales to far north Queensland and is typically found at the edges of various types of rainforests. This small tree can reach up to 15 meters in height and has a straight, cylindrical trunk with grey or brown bark. Its leaves are alternate, toothed, and wavy-edged, and its cream-colored flowers bloom in clusters from July to August. The tree is known for its attractive blue fruit, which matures between November and December. The muttonwood is a popular ornamental tree in Australia and its fruit is a food source for birds such as the Lewin's honeyeater and the rose crowned fruit dove. Germination from fresh seeds is easy, and it is recommended to remove the fleshy aril to assist with germination.
