It is native to the Caribbean islands of Jamaica and Hispaniola, and is also found in parts of Central and South America. The plant is a shrub or small tree, growing up to 8 m tall, with a dense, rounded crown. The leaves are simple, oblong-elliptic in shape, and are dark green in color. The flowers are small, white, and fragrant, and are borne in clusters at the ends of the branches. The fruit is a small, red berry.
