Myrsine australis, also known as māpou or red matipo, is a shrub endemic to New Zealand. It is commonly found throughout the mainland and offshore islands. This species has a compact crown and grows up to 6 meters tall. Its leaves are pale green with a yellow tinge and have a leathery texture. The plant produces small, cream-colored flowers and dark brown to black fruits that are dispersed by birds. Red matipo is a hardy species that can grow in a variety of environmental conditions and is commonly used in revegetation projects. It is also resistant to grazing and browsing by wild animals. This plant plays an important role in the ecosystem as a food source for native birds and as an early colonizer in abandoned land. It is not considered to be threatened or at risk of extinction.
