Phlox divaricata, also known as wild blue phlox, woodland phlox, or wild sweet william, is a flowering plant native to eastern North America. Its name comes from the Latin word "divaricata" meaning "spreading and straggling", referring to its growth habit. This semi-evergreen perennial can grow up to 50 cm tall and has opposite, hairy leaves. Its fragrant flowers bloom in late spring and early summer and come in a variety of pastel colors. Phlox divaricata grows in moist, deciduous woods and bluffs and has two subspecies. It is pollinated by butterflies, moths, and long-tongued bees, and requires cross-pollination to produce seeds. Cultivated varieties of this plant come in different colors and have won awards for their beauty.
