It is commonly known as spreading phlox and is native to western North America. It can be found in various habitats such as rocky mountain slopes and alpine terrains. The plant grows in compact mats or patches and has short stems with needle-like leaves. Its flowers are tubular with five lobes and can range in color from white to pink or blue. Phlox diffusa is widely distributed throughout the western United States, with its southern limits being Southern California and its northern limits reaching British Columbia in Canada. It is an important source of nectar for early season queen bumblebees and is pollinated by butterflies, bumblebees, and various fly species. The plant blooms from May to August and goes dormant in the winter months.
