Barringtonia macrostachya is a shrub or tree that can grow up to 30 meters tall with a trunk diameter of up to 95 centimeters. Its bark can range in color from brown to greenish yellow or greyish brown with mottled grey patterns. The plant produces obovoid fruits that can reach up to 9 centimeters in length. Its name, macrostachya, comes from the Greek word for "large spike" in reference to its inflorescence. This species is typically found in riverine and swamp forests, at elevations ranging from sea level to 1,300 meters. In addition to its natural habitat, B. macrostachya is also used for medicinal purposes, such as treating ringworm, sore eyes, and stomach aches. It has also been used as a fish poison. This plant can be found in various countries in Asia, including China, Burma, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, and the Philippines.
