Sarcodes sanguinea, also known as the snow plant or snow flower, is a unique and striking flowering plant found in the north-western region of America. It is the only species in the monotypic genus Sarcodes and belongs to the heath family. This parasitic plant relies on mycorrhizal fungi to obtain nutrients and is unable to photosynthesize due to a lack of chlorophyll. It forms a mutualistic relationship with the Basidiomycete Rhizopogon ellenae, stealing sugars from its photosynthetic partner through a process known as mycoheterotrophy. The plant's aboveground tissue is its inflorescence, a raceme of bright red flowers with strap-like bracts. S. sanguinea is native to montane areas of the California Floristic Province and is typically found in areas with snow cover. It was first described in 1853 by John Torrey and has been a popular subject among naturalists, including John Muir and William Whittingham Lyman Jr. The plant is edible when cooked, according to botanist James L. Reveal.
