Epigaea repens, also known as mayflower, trailing arbutus, or ground laurel, is a low-growing shrub found in North America. It prefers moist, shady areas and acidic soil, and is often found in oak-heath forests. The plant has woody stems and oval-shaped, evergreen leaves with a rust-colored underside. Its flowers are pale pink to white, fragrant, and arranged in clusters at the end of branches. The plant is the floral emblem of both Nova Scotia and Massachusetts, with a $50 fine for digging it up in Massachusetts. It has also been used medicinally by Native American tribes, with the Algonquin using it for kidney disorders and the Cherokee using it for various ailments. The Forest Potawatomi consider it to be a sacred flower.
