Dracophyllum milliganii is a unique alpine shrub that belongs to the family Ericaceae and is found only in western Tasmania. It has two distinct forms, one growing in heathland and the other in rainforests. The plant has long, dark green leaves with serrulate margins and a terminal flower spike with small white to pink flowers. It is closely related to other Tasmanian plants such as Richea pandanifolia and Isophysis tasmanica. The first formal description of this species was made by botanist Joseph Dalton Hooker in 1860, who named it after the amateur naturalist Joseph Milligan. The genus Dracophyllum is named after the "dragon tree" for its similar foliage. The relationships between D. milliganii and other related genera are still uncertain. This plant is an important indicator of highland vegetation in Tasmania and is found in harsh, open alpine environments.
