The Enkianthus campanulatus, also known as the redvein enkianthus, is a deciduous shrub that is native to Japan. It is a medium-sized, upright plant with glossy green foliage that turns brilliant shades of copper and red in the fall. In the spring, it produces an abundance of bell-shaped, creamy white flowers with red veins, similar to those of the Pieris plant. This shrub was brought to England by Charles Maries, a plant-hunter for Veitch Nurseries, and has been widely cultivated in parks and gardens. It is hardy and can reach heights of up to 15 feet under the right conditions. It prefers full sun to part shade and well-drained, acidic soil. The Enkianthus campanulatus has been recognized by the Royal Horticultural Society with an Award of Garden Merit.
