Diospyros buxifolia is a tree belonging to the Ebenaceae family, reaching heights of up to 30 meters. Its inflorescences can hold up to five flowers, and its fruits are ellipsoid, measuring up to 1.6 cm in length. The species name, buxifolia, is derived from the Latin word for boxwood, due to the similarity of its leaves to those of the Buxus genus. This tree is commonly found in forests at elevations ranging from sea level to 1,000 meters, and is distributed throughout India, Indochina, and Malesia, including New Guinea.
