Pyxidanthera brevifolia, also known as the littleleaf pixiemoss or sandhills pyxie-moss, is a plant species found only in North Carolina and South Carolina. It grows in sandy soil, particularly in sand hills and sandy ridgetops, and can also be found in open pine-oak woodlands at elevations between 50-200 meters. This species is closely related to the more widespread P. barbulata, and some experts suggest that they should be considered as a single species. However, the Flora of North America and the Kew Gardens Plant List currently recognize P. brevifolia as a distinct species. One way to differentiate between the two is by their leaves, as P. brevifolia has shorter leaves (usually less than 4 millimeters) and lacks the cilia found on the edges of P. barbulata leaves. Additionally, the underside of P. brevifolia leaves is more densely covered in woolly hairs.
