Viburnum triphyllum, also known as chuchua or chuque in Spanish, is a tree belonging to the Adoxaceae family and native to South America. It can grow up to 15 meters tall and has a distinctive crooked trunk. The leaves are lemon green with a cardboard-like texture, and the flowers are white and emit a pleasant scent. The fruits are fleshy and turn a deep red when ripe. This species is found in the Andean forests at elevations between 2400 and 3400 meters in Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. It plays an important role in ecological restoration due to its ability to exchange nutrients, form associations with fungi and bacteria, and thrive in nutrient-poor soils. The wood is used for construction and fuel, the bark contains tannins used in tanneries, and the fruits can be used to make a violet dye. It is also planted for ornamental purposes and provides food for birds and insects. Additionally, it is useful for watershed protection, live fences, and as a windbreaker. In Spanish, it is known by various names such as bodoquero, garrocho, and sauco de monte.
