Viburnum dentatum, also known as southern arrowwood or arrowwood viburnum, is a small shrub native to the eastern United States and Canada. It has simple, opposite leaves and produces berry-like drupes. The foliage turns yellow to red in the fall and there are variations of the species throughout its range. Some moth larvae feed on this plant, as well as an invasive species called the viburnum leaf beetle. The fruits of this shrub are a food source for songbirds and contain a high percentage of fat. The fruits are blue and contain complex pigments. Native Americans used the young stems to make arrow shafts. There are several varieties of Viburnum dentatum, including Viburnum dentatum var. deamii, Viburnum dentatum var. lucidum, and Viburnum dentatum var. venosum.

Expose seeds to natural outdoor winter conditions for 3 months, then gradually increase light and temperature in the spring.
Pulpy Coat Inhibits Germination: Seeds with a pulpy or fleshy outer coat need to have this material removed by soaking and rinsing in clean water daily for about a week. The inhibitory substances in the pulp are thus washed away, and germination rates improve.
