Zehneria scabra is a perennial herb that can either climb or trail, and is a member of the Cucurbitaceae family. It can grow up to 10 meters long and has woody stems with triangular to ovate leaves that are deep green in color. The fruit of this herb is oval shaped and bright red. It is found in Tropical Africa, Madagascar, India, and Java, Indonesia. In Ethiopia, it is known as 'hareg ressa' and is used to treat scabies by crushing its fruits and leaves to extract oil. The herb is also traditionally used to treat diarrhea, alopecia, wounds, and eczema. The Pare people of Tanzania also use oil extracts from the herb to treat skin infections.
