Telfairia pedata, also known as oysternut, is a dioecious African liana that can grow up to 30 meters long. It has large, drooping berries that can weigh up to 15 kg and is valued for its edible fruit, seeds, and oil. The plant is propagated by seeds and is found in high-precipitation tropical areas. It is native to Tanzania and northern Mozambique, but is also cultivated in other African countries. The seeds are used in various culinary ways and the oil is used in cooking, cosmetics, and medicine. The fatty acids found in the oil include linoleic acid, palmitic acid, stearic acid, oleic acid, and linolenic acid. The plant is relatively pest-resistant, but can be affected by shield bugs, nematodes, and insects. In Costa Rica, it has been attacked by borers in the main stem.
