Melothria scabra, also known as cucamelon or Mexican miniature watermelon, is a flowering plant in the cucurbit family. It is native to Mexico, Venezuela, and other parts of Central America. The plant produces small, grape-sized fruits that taste like cucumbers with a hint of sourness. It is believed to have been consumed by indigenous peoples before the arrival of Europeans. The plant is a fast-growing vine, reaching maturity in about 60-75 days. It has three or five-lobed leaves and produces both male and female flowers. The fruits, which are green with dark green stripes, are sweet unlike most other wild species in the cucurbit family. The plant is drought-resistant and relatively pest-resistant. It is susceptible to diseases such as downy mildew and powdery mildew. Melothria scabra is cultivated for its edible fruits, which can be eaten raw or pickled.
