Genus Description
Suggest a correction!Fevillea is a genus of climbing lianas in the family Cucurbitaceae that includes about twelve species distributed from southern Mexico to northern Argentina (POWO, 2024; WFO, 2024). The type species, Fevillea cordifolia L., exemplifies the group. Fevillea lianas climb by axillary tendrils; leaves alternate, simple, often cordate to palmately lobed, glabrous to sparsely pubescent. Stipules reduced. Plants dioecious; male flowers in racemes have a bell‑shaped five‑petaled corolla and three stamens in a column. Female flowers solitary or few, with an inferior ovary, parietal placentation, and a five‑lobed style. The fruit is a pepo, globose to ellipsoid, with a thick, often warty rind and many seeds in a fleshy aril (Schaeffer et al., 2022; Kocyan et al., 2021).
The genus reaches its highest diversity in the lowland rainforests of the Amazon Basin and the Guiana Shield, with additional species in Central America and the Andean foothills. F. hederacea is confined to eastern Brazil, while F. petiolaris occurs only in Colombian montane forests. Typically the vines occupy riverine or secondary forest edges from sea level up to about 1,500 m. Some taxa show strong edaphic specialization, such as limestone outcrop endemics (Stevens, 2021).
Field observations indicate that tubular male flowers attract bees and moths, consistent with typical insect pollination cues in Cucurbitaceae. Fruits are eaten by birds and mammals, which disperse the seeds after ingesting the aril; in some riverine species the pepos are buoyant and may drift downstream. Chromosome counts of 2n = 48 for F. cordifolia indicate a base number of x = 12 (Kocyan et al., 2021).
Molecular phylogenies place Fevillea in tribe Melothrieae, forming a clade sister to Sicyos (Schaeffer et al., 2022; Kocyan et al., 2021). No formal subgeneric sections are widely accepted, though a provisional grouping based on fruit shape has been proposed. Historically, some authors merged the genus with Posadaea (Delprete, 2006) or treated species as Cucumis subg. Fevillea (Stevens, 2021). Sequencing data confirm Fevillea's distinctness and reject broad synonymizations.
Fevillea species are occasionally cultivated in tropical botanical collections for ornamental foliage and pendulous pepos, but the fruits contain bitter cucurbitacins and are not used as food. The vines are not of commercial timber importance and are considered minor components of secondary forest vegetation.
Most species lack IUCN assessments, and deforestation of lowland Amazonian forests poses the primary threat. Targeted field surveys, taxonomic refinement, and red‑listing are needed to inform future conservation strategies.
