Dendrosicyos is a unique genus in the Cucurbitaceae family, with its only species, Dendrosicyos socotranus, being endemic to the island of Socotra in Yemen. This species is the only one in the family to grow in a tree form. It was first described in 1882 and has since been found to be an island relic of a progenitor lineage that became extinct on the mainland. The plant has a bulbous trunk, small crown, and round leaves with fine bristles. Its yellow flowers and fruits are present on the same plant for cross pollination, and it reproduces only by seed. However, it is considered endangered due to overgrazing and regeneration issues. The plant is responsive to being drenched and fertilized, and can reach up to 3 meters in height. Its base is made up of parenchyma and small xylem strands, and it is the first member of the Cucurbitaceae family to have a demonstrated meristem.
