Cucurbita okeechobeensis, also known as the Okeechobee gourd, is a species of gourd native to Mexico and the United States. It has two subspecies, one found in Florida around Lake Okeechobee and the other in the state of Veracruz in Mexico. This gourd was once abundant, but is now listed as an endangered species by state and federal authorities. One of its unique features is its yellow corolla, which is not commonly seen in other Cucurbita species. This climbing vine has heart or kidney-shaped leaves with irregular serrate margins and is covered in downy hair when young. Its bell-shaped flowers are cream-colored with long corollas. The taxonomy of this species is uncertain, but it was previously classified as Pepo okeechobeensis. It is now divided into two subspecies, Cucurbita okeechobeensis subsp. martinezii and Cucurbita okeechobeensis subsp. okeechobeensis. The Okeechobee gourd is often found growing on abandoned alligator nests in pond apple groves near Lake Okeechobee.
