Cucurbita ficifolia, also known as Asian pumpkin, black seed squash, or Malabar gourd, is a species of squash that is grown for its edible seeds, fruit, and greens. It is widely cultivated in regions such as India, Japan, China, and Mexico. Unlike other domesticated species in its genus, C. ficifolia has relatively similar morphology and genetic composition throughout its range. It is an annual plant with a vine habit that can grow up to 15 meters and produce over 50 oval-shaped fruits with black or dark brown seeds. The fruit is used in a variety of culinary dishes, including jams and sweets, and the seeds are high in fat and protein. C. ficifolia is also used in traditional medicine to treat diabetes, and its vine and fruit are used as animal feed. It is believed to have originated in the Americas and spread to other regions through trade.
