Native to the Southwestern United States and Northwestern Mexico, Cucurbita digitata is a species of flowering plant in the squash family. It is similar to other species in the genus Cucurbita, and all of these species hybridize readily. It prefers hot, arid regions with low rainfall and soil that is loose, gravelly, and well-drained. The juvenile leaves of C. digitata show a high degree of similarity to other species in the group, but their mature leaves and root structures are visibly different. The fruit is a dark green squash, rounded or nearly rounded, with mottling and distinct white stripes. It was first identified by Asa Gray in 1853.
