Cucurbita cylindrata is a type of flowering plant in the squash family that is closely related to other species such as Cucurbita californica, Cucurbita cordata, Cucurbita digitata, and Cucurbita palmata. These species are known to easily crossbreed with each other and are the only restricted xerophyte species group within the Cucurbita genus. They are all native to the Southwestern United States and Northwestern Mexico, where they are not commonly found. These plants thrive in hot, dry climates with loose, gravelly, and well-drained soil. C. cylindrata is specifically found in the middle portion of Baja California, mostly in Baja California Sur. Botanists Bemis and Whitaker suggest that C. cordata and C. cylindrata may have evolved through sympatric speciation. While the juvenile leaves of these species look similar, their mature leaves and root structures are visibly different. C. cylindrata fruits are round, dark green, and striped. This species was first identified by Liberty Hyde Bailey in 1943.
