Alsomitra macrocarpa, also known as "grove mitre/fillet" and "large-fruited," is a gourd-bearing liana found in the tropical forests of Southeast Asia, Australia, and South America. Its unique football-sized fruits are bell-shaped and contain a large number of seeds with papery wings. These seeds are able to glide long distances when they fall from the fruit, earning the plant the nickname "Javan cucumber." The plant was first described in 1825 and has undergone several name changes before being officially named Alsomitra macrocarpa. The plant's seed propagation has been studied and has inspired early aviation pioneers, including Igo Etrich. In 2022, the seed's directional instability has inspired the design of a biodegradable gliding sensor for environmental monitoring.
