It is often found in the understory of wetland forests. It is a larval host for the spring azure butterfly.

Cornus foemina is a species of flowering plant native to parts of the eastern and southeastern United States. It is a large shrub or small tree up to 15 feet tall with smooth or furrowed bark and oval-shaped, deciduous leaves with smooth edges. It produces white flowers in flat-topped clusters and blue or purple drupes as fruit. This plant grows in wetlands, often in swampy conditions, and can tolerate moderate amounts of salinity. It is a larval host for the spring azure butterfly.
