Pollia condensata, also known as the marble berry, is a perennial plant found in African forests. Its most distinctive feature is its shiny, metallic blue fruit, which is created by a unique structural coloration process. The fruit has a smooth and transparent surface that reflects light like a mirror, and beneath this lies a layer of cells with a spiral structure that reflects light in a specific wavelength. This process of constructive interference produces the most intense coloration of any living organism. Despite having no nutritional value, the fruit is attractive to birds who sometimes use it to decorate their nests, helping to disperse the seeds. This structural coloration is a rare phenomenon in plants and has been compared to the coloration of the morpho butterfly wing, but is even stronger.
