Commelina sphaerorrhizoma is a unique, blue-flowered herb found in south-central Africa. It has been recorded in western Zambia, central Angola, and the southern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, but may be more broadly distributed. This plant is known for its moniliform rhizome made up of spherical segments, giving it its scientific name. It can be found in a variety of habitats, from woodlands to grasslands to roadsides. It was first described in 2009, but was first collected in 1906 by John Gossweiler. Its relationships with other species in the Commelina genus are still unknown. It is currently known from an area larger than 10,000 square kilometers, but is believed to be more widespread. It has been collected in diverse habitats such as woodlands, grasslands, and bog edges, and is commonly found in sandy soils.
