Commelina grossa is a plant found in East and Southern African countries such as Tanzania, Malawi, and Zambia. It is easily identifiable by its long and linear basal leaves and large, hairless spathes. The petals are mauve-blue and the lower petal is smaller, while the sepals are fused into a cup. These characteristics suggest a relation to other plants in the same family. This species is typically found in woodland areas with sandy or seasonally waterlogged soil and blooms between April and June.
