The fruit is a drupe, about 1 cm in diameter, and is edible. The leaves are alternate, oblong-lanceolate, and have a glossy green color. The bark is smooth and gray.
Salacia petenensis is a tropical tree native to Central America, found in cloud forests and along the eastern coast of Costa Rica at elevations of 1500 to 1700 m. It has small flowers with a rotten fruit-like odor, and produces edible drupes about 1 cm in diameter. The leaves are alternate, oblong-lanceolate, and glossy green, and the bark is smooth and gray. It flowers from March through May and also in October and November.
