, a Roman festival held in groves in honour of Diana
Gymnosporia nemorosa is a versatile evergreen shrub or small tree found in various regions of South Africa. It can grow up to 5 meters tall and has a unique form in Maputaland where it grows as an underground tree. The plant produces fragrant white flowers and dusky-pink fruits that open to reveal orange arils. Its leaves are glossy and dark green with serrated margins and are often browsed by Black Rhino. The plant also serves as a food source for the larvae of the African moth Drepanogynis cambogiaria. Gymnosporia nemorosa contains various phytochemicals such as galactitol, β-amyrin, and Lupeol derivatives. Its name is derived from the Latin word for grove, reflecting its habitat in forest edges.
