Euonymus atropurpureus, also known as American wahoo or eastern wahoo, is a deciduous shrub native to eastern North America. It can reach heights of up to 8 meters and is primarily found in the Midwestern United States, but can also be found in southern Ontario, northern Florida, and Texas. This shrub grows in a variety of habitats, including meadows, slopes, woodlands, and stream banks. It has dark purplish-brown twigs and elliptical leaves that turn bright red in the fall. The flowers are small and produce a reddish-pink fruit with four lobes, each containing a single seed. While the fruit is poisonous to humans, it is eaten by birds who help disperse the seeds. This plant has also been used medicinally by Native Americans and pioneers as a purgative.
