Rumex hymenosepalus, also known as canaigre, is a perennial flowering plant found in the deserts of southwestern United States and northern Mexico. It is a common food source for the ruddy copper larvae and has been cultivated for its roots, which are a good source of tannin used in leather tanning. The plant also yields a brown dye and its young leaves and stalks are edible. It was first described by botanist John Torrey in 1859 and has several synonyms, including Rumex arizonicus and Rumex salinus.
