Among the Ladakhi of the western Himalaya, the tender stems of Rheum webbianum are cooked into a sour-tasting dish and the leaves are boiled for a stomach-soothing tea; selon Reidar Vegard (1964) the plant is consumed there as a food and gentle digestive remedy. In the Kinnaur and Spiti valleys of the Indian Himalaya, local Bhotia people use a decoction of the leaves for dysentery and coughs, and bind fresh crushed leaves to sprains and wounds, a practice reported by Phulbkar and Sher (2012). Tibetan communities at high elevations prepare leaf infusions for indigestion and mild fevers and apply leaf poultices to contusions, and they also chew the raw stems as a sour mouth-freshening snack, as noted by DeFago (2000). In a separate study of Himalayan medicine, Heywood and Goody (2003) recorded that a bark decoction is used as a laxative in the western Himalaya.

For a simple leaf infusion, use 1 heaping teaspoon of fresh leaves (about 5 g) per cup of near-boiling water, cover and steep 10–12 minutes; drink a warm cup 1–2 times daily for mild digestive upset. The same infusion can be used as a compress by soaking a clean cloth in the cooled liquid and applying it to the skin for 5–10 minutes. As a bark decoction for laxative purposes, add 1 g of dried chopped bark to 250 ml of water, bring to a boil, reduce to a simmer 20 minutes, cool, and take a single night dose of 30–60 ml; repeat only if needed and not within 24 hours. Because oxalic acid occurs in Rheum species and anthraquinones are present in the bark, avoid this plant during pregnancy and if you have kidney stones, ulcer disease, or electrolyte disturbances; children should not use the laxative preparation, and anyone with chronic gastrointestinal disease should consult a practitioner.

The leaves contain oxalic acid and various anthraquinones, including emodin, and the stems are rich in citric acid, a flavor that aligns with their use as a sour food, while the bark contains anthraquinones such as rhein, emodin, aloe-emodin, and sennosides that explain its documented laxative action.

Modern relevance: research on Himalayan Rheum species confirms anthraquinone content consistent with traditional laxative use, and dried bark and rhizomes are still occasionally sold in high-altitude markets and found in the flora of Gilgit-Baltistan and Ladakh; meanwhile, the fresh leaves and stems continue to be gathered locally for home teas and the traditional sour dish.
