Polygonum paronychia, also known as dune knotweed, black knotweed, and beach knotweed, is a flowering plant native to the western coast of North America. It can be found in sandy coastal habitats such as beaches, dunes, and scrub. This small shrub has brown stems that can grow up to a meter long and may root at nodes that come in contact with moist substrate. Its leaves are linear to lance-shaped with rolled edges and bristly midribs on the undersides, and each leaf has a large stipule that forms a wide, membranous ochrea. The plant produces small white or pinkish flowers in the leaf axils. In traditional medicine, it has been used as a poultice to treat whitlow infections.
