Polygonum majus, also known as wiry knotweed, is a North American plant found in the western United States and western Canada. It is a low-growing annual weed with tiny blue-green leaves and inconspicuous whitish-green flowers. It can form a dense mat and is difficult to control, often appearing in unexpected places in gardens and lawns. Knotweed has slender stems and a thin taproot, and it spreads through its wiry stems and tiny seeds. It is commonly confused with garden spurge, but can be distinguished by the absence of a milky liquid when split. Knotweed is most effectively controlled through the use of herbicides, with glyphosate being the most effective when applied at the proper growth stage and dosage. It is an invasive species and its rhizomes are responsible for its spread and damage. Research has shown that glyphosate is the most effective control method, but its use may be restricted in certain areas due to environmental concerns. Other physical control methods, such as cutting and mowing, have been found to be less effective.
