Polygonum arenastrum, also known as equal-leaved knotgrass, is a summer annual flowering plant in the knotweed family. It is native to Europe but can also be found on other continents as an introduced species and a common noxious weed. It has many common names, including common knotweed, prostrate knotweed, mat grass, and wiregrass. The plant has a deep tap root and thrives in compacted soil and drought conditions. Its stems grow in a zigzag form and its leaves are oblong and bluish-green in color. The plant produces inconspicuous flowers and egg-shaped seeds. It is often mistaken for the native plant spotted spurge, but can be distinguished by its lack of milky sap. Common knotweed is commonly found in brown-field sites, roadsides, pavements, and gardens. It germinates in early spring and can spread quickly, forming a mat up to 3-4 feet in diameter. It is a weed of waste areas and can also be problematic in grain fields. It is a host for powdery mildew and viruses. Some sources consider it a subspecies or variety of Polygonum aviculare. In home gardens, it can be easily removed by hand pulling or using
